Barcode vs QR Code: Which is Better for Your Retail Store in 2025?

Barcodes have been the backbone of retail inventory management for decades. But QR codes are rapidly gaining ground, especially in markets where mobile payments and contactless shopping are the norm. Which should your business use?

Traditional Barcodes

Standard 1D barcodes (like EAN-13 and UPC-A) are fast to scan, universally supported by existing POS hardware, and ideal for simple product identification. They store a limited amount of data — typically just a product ID — but that is usually all you need at the point of sale.

QR Codes

QR codes are two-dimensional and can store significantly more data, including URLs, product descriptions, and payment information. They can be scanned by any smartphone camera, making them excellent for customer-facing applications like menus, product information pages, and contactless payments.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Use barcodes for internal inventory management, shelf labelling, and POS scanning where speed is paramount
  • Use QR codes for customer-facing applications, digital receipts, loyalty programmes, and contactless payment
  • Use both on product labels to serve different scanning contexts
The smartest retailers are not choosing between barcodes and QR codes — they are using both strategically.

Modern POS systems support both formats, so there is no reason to limit yourself to one. Implement whichever format best serves each specific use case in your retail operation.
